DAY 1

Otopeni International Airport – Sinaia
Transfer to Sinaia

Ploiesti is the capital City of Prahova County, situated in the North part of Romanian Plane. It is one of the big cities in Romania and an important communication junction (roads and railways). In 1599 the town became a trade center for the both plane villages and towns and the North region of hills and mountains. In august 1870 there was an attempt to depose King Carol I by the inhabitants of Ploiesti lead by Major Candiano Popescu. In early 20th century important strikes hit the town, the most important being in 1933 when the oil workers protested against the economic decline. The surrounding area is very reach in oil, several oil refineries being in the near by Ploiesti. Heavy booming destroyed most of the city in 1944. Today Ploiesti have been reconstruct totally.

Sinaia is the former royal city, where we will visit the Peles Castle. The former residence of the King is nowadays a museum, and Sinaia's main attraction and one of the most valuable architectonic monuments of Romania. It was built between 1875 and 1883. In the castle we can recognize different architectonic styles, German Renaissance elements prevail and also Gothic style. The architects have used everything to give splendor and content to the construction: wood decoration is in abundance in the interior and also exterior to confer to the castle a special air. Situated in a beautiful park with gorgeous terraces, Peles Castle has 160 rooms and halls where can be seen different ornamental objects: Oriental carpets, fine ivory sculptures, tapestries, furniture, weapon collections (15th - 19th centuries), and paintings. The most impressive rooms are: the “Hall of Honor”, the “Large Weapon Room” (with objects from India, Persia, Turkey, Arabia), the “Council Room” (Swiss colored glass window, 16th - 17th centuries), the “Music Room”, the “Florentine Room”, the “Mirror Room”, the “Moorish Room” (with a collection inspired by the Spanish Alhambra Palace), the “Turkish Drawing-Room”, the “Theater Room”. You can not miss the gardens and terraces around the castle with their famous Italian Renascence sculptures.

Pelisor Castle - built between 1899-1902 by the Czech architect Karel Liman and decorated by Bernhard Ludwig from Vienna, the Pelisor belonged to the royal couple Ferdinand and Maria, since 1903. Pelisor castle contains a valuable collection of decorative art belonging to the Art - Nouveau style; works of artists like E. Galle, Daum Brothers, J. Hoffman, L.C. Tiffany, Gurschner etc. Among other rooms, there can be seen “The Golden Bedroom”, “The Chapel”, “The Golden Room”, which -
without a doubt - have a unique value.

Sinaia Monastery was erected by the military commander Mihail Cantacuzino between 1690 - 1695. On the right wall, at the church entrance is a picture of Carol the 1st and Queen Elisabeth.
