Sibiu was the capital city on Sibiu County. Situated in the contact region of Transylvanian plateau and Carpathian Mountains have 170.000 inhabitants. The city was an important trade center; the commerce with Western Europe and with Wallachia (South of Carpathians) made Sibiu one of the richest cities in Transylvania. In 1141 the Germans where brought by the Hungarian rulers in order to consolidate the city that had a very good location, near to the easiest pass of the Carpathians, the Olt valley. Sibiu is the largest fortified city of Transylvania (39 defending towers), never being conquered by the Turks. For hundreds of years the square was called “Grosser Ring” or “Grosser Platz”. Between the two World Wars its name was King Ferdinand Square and the communists changed it in The Republic Square, but since 1990 it regained its original name.

The Council Tower, had many roles, from cereal warehouse to observation point in case of fire, as a temporary prison or even as a natural science museum in the middle of the 18th century. Later the Tower has been used as a medieval weapons exhibition place. Nowadays, the Tower offers from level 7 a wonderful view over the historical city. You will have also the possibility to admire the clock’s mechanism.

The Brukental Museum was built by a famous architect from Vienna between 1781-1785 in the late baroque style. The portal of massive stone is decorated, above the entrance, with Samuel Brukental’s arms. The entrance hall is sustained by a strong stone column.
