Sibiu – walking tour
Breakfast
The city of Sibiu is one of the most beautiful cities in Transylvania and it was declared the European Capital of Culture in 2007! It has a special charm because it is a "museum city" which reminds us of the old times with the walls of its defense tower and the fortifications of the former Sibiu fortress. The city preserves many old houses and buildings, a real joy of the medieval architecture.
The Big Square - ‘The Great Ring’-is the historical centre of Sibiu. The Big Square was first mentioned in 1411 as a cereal market, and beginning with the 16th century it became the centre of the old city. The public executions and gatherings took place here. For hundreds of years it was called Grosser Ring or Grosser Platz; between the wars its name was King Ferdinand Square, and the communists changed it in The Republic Square, but since 1990 it regained its original name.
The Council Tower - it had many roles, from cereal warehouse to observation point in case of fire, as a temporary prison or even as a natural science museum in the middle 18th century. In our century, the Tower has been used as a medieval weapons exposition. Nowadays, the Tower offers from level 7 a beautiful view over the historical city. You will have also the possibility to admire the clock’s mechanism situated one floor below.
The Brukental Museum – built by a famous architect from Vienna between 1781-1785 in the late baroque style. The portal above the entrance made of massive stone is decorated with Samuel Brukental’s arms. The entrance hall is sustained by strong, stone columns.
The Evangelical Church –the construction began at the middle of the 14th century and was finished in 1520. It has elements of the Renaissance style.
