Romania is a medium sized country, situated in the South-East of Europe.

The Danube Delta is the newest land of Romania , being formed by the sand and mud brought there by the Danube . Here the people live in a close relationship with the water, in small picturesque villages. The only town in that region is Sulina, situated at the end of the Sulina Canal at the Black Sea coast.
The Danube Delta is the nesting place of numerous birds. Many of them are coming at the beginning of the winter from Siberia and the North Circle , while others are leaving the Delta to migrate for an easy winter in Africa .
In the last years many new guesthouses, hotels and camping's opened their doors for tourists. Accommodation on one of the floating hotels is also a good choice.
Medieval towns and castles in Transylvania keep the feeling alive of those cruel middle ages. Traces of great battles can still be seen in the defending towers.
In the middle of Transylvania there is a fortified town named Sighisoara.
It is unique in this part of Europe , because it is the only medieval town still dwelt. Some of the houses are over 600 years old. Town walls, towers and gates are still well preserved. In this town Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula, was born. The house can be visited, hosting a nice restaurant and bar.
Sighisoara citadel is already for many years part of the UNESCO patrimony.
Transylvania is the central region of Romania , surrounded by the Carpathians mountains. It is a region with a rich history. The former center region of Dacia , the antique lands on the actual Romanian territory. After the Roman conquers, Transylvania became the main region of the empire. The Western Carpathians supplied in that time the empire with gold and silver, cattle and wood.
In the Middle Ages Transylvania become the center of the Hungarian kingdom. After World War I, in 1918 Transylvania was joined to Romania .
The Germans were brought in the 12 and 13 th century by the Hungarian kings, in order to defend the passes and to create towns in the region. The traces of those colonists still can be found in the big cities of Transylvania and in the country side. You find them too in the typical houses with big walls, large gates and inner yards. Sibiu was the second fortified city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, after Vienna .
Sibiu is, together with Luxembourg the Culture European Capital in 2007.
One of the most interesting places to go in Romania is the North part of Moldavia known as: Bucovina.
Here you find the most valuable, rich-ornamented monasteries of Europe . Some of them are more than 500 years old are extremely well preserved. The colors look as they were painted yesterday! The famous "Voronet blue" is known all over the world.
Monasteries are also fortified, Sucevita being the most representative.
In the 19 th century the Romanian government decided to bring a European king from an important family to the country. Carol of Hohenzollern Sigmaringhen was chosen to be the next king of Romania . A few years after his election the king started the building of a summer residence, Peles Castle , in a beautiful mountain resort, Sinaia.
Bucharest is the capital city of Romania .
It has over 2.5 million inhabitants. It is the most important cultural, political and administrative center of the country. Every year Bucharest attracts more and more tourists. Because of the many universities you find here, there are thousands of students in the city. The many clubs, concert halls and theatres you find in Bucharest are full every night.
For those people who want to enjoy the classical touch: Bucharest offers great ballet and opera and operetta performances every evening, from early October to late June.
